After I raked the ground, I spread the potting soil over my modest plot and tossed the rake aside, remembering not to step on it and conk myself on the bean. Even with just plain potting soil, it looked to be an improvement. Next, I dug a small hole for each plant, trying to crowd out of my head the idea that a bike boulevard could get a million dollars over budget. This was supposed to be therapeutic. The first plant went into its small excavation, and I lovingly propped it up with the dirt I had produced to dig the hole.
